BCCI Shares Major Update on Shubman Gill’s Recovery and 2nd Test Availability

The BCCI has finally provided clarity on Shubman Gill’s condition after the Indian Test captain suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. The board has confirmed that Gill is recovering well and will travel with the team to Guwahati for the second Test. However, whether he plays or not will be decided closer to match day.

Gill Recovering Well, Will Travel With the Team

In an official statement posted on X, the BCCI revealed that Gill has been responding positively to medical treatment after being taken to the hospital for scans on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. He was kept under observation and discharged the following day.

According to the update, Gill will accompany the squad to Guwahati on 19 November 2025, and the medical team will continue to monitor his progress.

BCCI’s Official Medical Statement

The board stated:

“Medical Update: Shubman Gill. Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team. He will continue to be monitored, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly.”

How Gill Got Injured

Gill sustained the injury early in India’s first innings. He faced only three balls before walking off in discomfort and did not return to bat for the rest of the match. Before the start of Day 3, the BCCI had already confirmed he would take no further part in the Test.

India Missed Their Captain

Gill’s absence proved costly. Without their skipper in the second innings, India failed to chase a modest target of 124 and crumbled to a 30-run defeat. The batting lineup struggled under pressure, highlighting Gill’s importance at the top.

Who Will Lead India If Gill Misses the 2nd Test?

If Gill is not declared fit in time, Rishabh Pant is likely to lead India in Guwahati.

To fill the vacant batting spot, the team management may choose from:

  • Devdutt Padikkal
  • Sai Sudharsan
  • Nitish Reddy
