Bangladesh have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Wicketkeeper-batter Nigar Sultana Joty has been retained as captain, continuing in the role she held during Bangladesh’s maiden World Cup appearance in 2022.
Fresh Faces in the Squad
The squad sees exciting inclusions, with Rubya Haider earning her first-ever ODI call-up after featuring in six T20Is. Rising stars Nishita Akter Nishi and Sumaiya Akter, who both played in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, have also been drafted in.
- Sumaiya Akter, who captained Bangladesh in Malaysia, made her ODI debut against Australia in March 2024.
- Nishita Akter Nishi, the youngest player in the squad, debuted against Pakistan in 2023 and has since played two ODIs.
Selectors Back Young Talent
Bangladesh Women’s Wing chief selector Sazzad Ahmed Mansur praised Nishita’s temperament and bowling maturity:
“Nishita may be young, but she bowls with great maturity. Her calmness under pressure and her ability to contain left-handers make her a valuable addition to our spin attack.”
On Sumaiya’s selection, the selectors highlighted her batting and fielding strengths:
“Sumaiya has been knocking on the door for some time. She can both hold the crease and accelerate when needed. Along with her fielding, she provides us with a strong all-round option in the top order.”
Tournament Schedule
Bangladesh will begin their World Cup 2025 campaign on October 2 against Pakistan in Colombo. Ahead of the tournament, the team will play two warm-up games — against South Africa on September 25 and Sri Lanka on September 27.
