Cricket has seen many unusual career trajectories, but few are as dramatic—and as short-lived—as that of Australian off-spinner Jason Krejza. He burst onto the international scene with a stunning 8-wicket haul on debut against India, only to see his Test career end after just two matches.
A Dream Debut That Shocked India
Krejza made his debut during the Nagpur Test of the 2008 Border–Gavaskar Trophy, a match Australia desperately needed to win. Picked as a surprise choice, he delivered one of the most remarkable debut spells by an Australian spinner:
8 for 215 in the first innings, dismantling a star-studded Indian lineup.

Only Sachin Tendulkar and debutant Murali Vijay escaped him in that innings. Krejza took four more wickets in the second innings, removing Laxman, Ganguly, and MS Dhoni among others.
Despite India winning the match—Ganguly’s farewell Test—Krejza was awarded Player of the Match, a rare honor for a debutant in a losing side.
A Career That Ended Almost Immediately
After that sensational debut, Krejza was surprisingly left out of the next series against New Zealand. He returned for the Test series against South Africa, but the comeback proved costly.
In the Perth Test, Krejza conceded 102 runs in each innings and managed just one wicket across the match. Concerns over his high economy rate overshadowed his ability to take wickets, and Australian selectors quickly moved on, seeking more control-oriented options.
