Australia have made a last-minute change to their T20I squad ahead of the five-match series against India, with star leg-spinner Adam Zampa set to miss the start of the tour.
Just two days before the first match in Canberra, Zampa opted out of the opening fixtures as his wife, Harriet, is expecting their second child. In his place, Tanveer Sangha has been added to the squad.
Zampa to Miss the Start of the Series
Zampa — Australia’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is — was expected to play a key role in the upcoming series. He had earlier missed the first ODI of the recent three-match series against India but returned for the remaining games, helping Australia secure a 2–1 series win.
This time, however, he will be absent for at least the initial part of the T20I series, creating an opening for one of Australia’s promising young spinners.
Sangha Gets His Opportunity
The 23-year-old Tanveer Sangha has been handed the chance to step up once again. Sangha made his international debut in 2023, picking up an impressive 4/31 on debut against South Africa.
He has represented Australia in seven T20Is, including the last of those against India in Bengaluru. So far, he has claimed 10 wickets at an economy of 8.89, making him a solid option to fill Zampa’s shoes.
Australia Balancing Workload Ahead of Ashes
With the Ashes 2025–26 on the horizon, Australia have also introduced several planned changes to their T20I squad to manage player workloads.
- Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the side.
- Glenn Maxwell returns for the final three matches after recovering from a wrist fracture.
- Josh Hazlewood will feature in the first two games, while Sean Abbott will be available for the first three. Both will then turn their focus to Sheffield Shield red-ball cricket.
- Mahli Beardman, an uncapped pacer, has earned a surprise call-up for the last three matches.
The series kicks off on October 29 in Canberra.
