Aiden Markram Creates History With Record-Breaking Catching Display

Aiden Markram etched his name into South African cricket history on Wednesday (November 26), becoming the first South African outfielder in 136 years to take seven catches in a single Test match.

Seven Catches in the Guwahati Test

In the ongoing second Test against India at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Markram grabbed five catches across the earlier sessions and added two more on the morning of Day 5, taking his tally to seven catches — the most by any South African in Test cricket.

The previous South African record stood at six catches, first set by Bert Vogler in 1910 and later matched by:

  • Bruce Mitchell (1931)
  • Jacques Kallis (2012)
  • Graeme Smith (2012)
  • David Bedingham (2025)

Markram has now surpassed them all.

Rahane Holds the All-Time World Record

While Markram now owns the South African record, the overall world record for most catches by an outfielder in a Test match is held by India’s Ajinkya Rahane, who took eight catches against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2015.

Only a handful of players in history have taken seven catches in a Test, and Markram has now joined that elite list.

Markram Eyes World Record

With two sessions left in the match, Markram still has a chance to match the world record or even break it:

  • 1 more catch → equals Ajinkya Rahane’s world record (8)
  • 2 more catches → becomes the all-time record holder

History is within touching distance for the South African star.
