India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has strongly backed Jasprit Bumrah amid ongoing debates about his workload management. Ahead of the 2025 Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy against England, the team management decided Bumrah would play only three of the five Tests — a move that sparked mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers.
Physical & Mental Demands on a Fast Bowler
Speaking on a podcast, Bhuvneshwar explained why the decision made sense, highlighting the toll fast bowling takes on the body and mind.
“Considering how many years Bumrah has been playing all formats, it’s tough for anyone to sustain that. With his unique bowling action, injuries can happen to him or anyone,” he said.
Bhuvneshwar stressed that playing fewer matches doesn’t mean contributing less.
“If a player can deliver match-winning performances in three games, that’s just as valuable as playing all five,” he added.
Managing Expectations for Longevity
Bhuvneshwar also spoke about the constant pressure Bumrah faces as India’s premier bowler.
“People don’t realise how hard it is to keep performing for years across formats. Bumrah bowls in tough situations, under both mental and physical pressure. If you want him to have a long career, you must manage him wisely,” he said.
Impact in the England Series
The management’s faith paid off — Bumrah claimed 14 wickets in his three appearances, including two five-wicket hauls, proving his ability to deliver even with a lighter workload.
From Promising Talent to World-Class Pacer
Reflecting on Bumrah’s growth, Bhuvneshwar said:
“From the day he arrived, you could see something special. His skills haven’t changed, but years of performance bring confidence. Once established, you don’t panic when things go wrong — that maturity comes with experience.”
