Ever since retiring from Test cricket after leading India to Champions Trophy glory, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played a single international match. Both have already called time on their T20I careers, and speculation has been building around their ODI future.
Raina’s Strong Backing for Rohit & Virat
Former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes both seniors are essential to India’s ODI setup — not just for their skill, but for their ability to mentor the next generation.
Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, Raina said:
“Rohit and Virat’s experience is very important. It’s crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit.”
Raina praised their winning mentality, reminding that both have lifted the Champions Trophy and World Cups, while Kohli also won the IPL last season.
“For the astute leadership they’ve shown throughout their careers, they need to be part of the dressing room,” he added.
Expected Comeback Against Australia
Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to the international arena during India’s home series against Australia later this year, which includes three ODIs.
Raina’s Praise for Mohammed Siraj
Raina also voiced his support for Mohammed Siraj, saying the pacer should be part of all three formats.
“Siraj has performed brilliantly with both the white ball and red ball. He bowled 187 overs in the series and came through without any niggle,” Raina said.
Uncertainty Still Looms
Despite their expressed interest in playing the 2027 World Cup, Rohit and Kohli’s ODI futures remain uncertain. Reports suggest the BCCI may require them to participate in domestic cricket during their break from internationals — and failure to comply could see them dropped. The last time such pressure arose, both opted for Test retirement, leaving their ODI involvement in limbo.
