R Ashwin on Sanju Samson to CSK – “Chances Are Bleak”

The buzz around Sanju Samson possibly joining Chennai Super Kings has been strong ever since reports claimed the Rajasthan Royals captain wanted to leave the franchise. Samson reportedly asked RR to either release or trade him, prompting the Royals to reach out to multiple IPL teams.

Among all, Chennai Super Kings emerged as the most talked-about destination. According to The Indian Express, Samson even met CSK management and head coach Stephen Fleming during the Major League Cricket season in the US. CSK were reportedly interested in signing him “through a trade deal via cash,” but talks stalled quickly.

Ashwin Explains Why the Deal Doesn’t Make Sense

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed the chances of this high-profile move, saying RR would struggle to get equal value in return. Using Ravi Bishnoi as an example, Ashwin explained that if LSG traded Bishnoi for Samson, they would also have to manage the remaining purse to retain Samson — making the swap unrealistic.

“If Sanju is traded to CSK and RR then approach other teams, they’re unlikely to get players of equal value. The purse management issue makes it even harder,” Ashwin said.

CSK’s Reluctance to Trade Big Names

Ashwin also pointed out that CSK rarely engage in trades and are unlikely to part with big names like Ravindra Jadeja or Shivam Dube.

“CSK don’t usually trade. They won’t trade someone like Jadeja or Dube. So, in all likelihood, Sanju coming to CSK is bleak. RR don’t have much to gain from such a deal,” he added.

Rajasthan’s Demands Hit a Wall

According to a Cricbuzz report, RR owner Manoj Badale contacted CSK about a possible Samson trade, asking for Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jadeja, or Dube in return. But CSK’s refusal to let go of any of them has left the move stuck in limbo — and for now, the dream of seeing Samson in yellow seems far-fetched.
