Why ICC Punished Pakistan’s Sidra Amin After 2025 Women’s World Cup Loss to India

Pakistan opener Sidra Amin has been reprimanded and handed one demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being found guilty of equipment abuse during the 2025 Women’s World Cup clash against India in Colombo.

What Led to the Sanction?

Amin, who was Pakistan’s standout performer in the match with a gritty 81-run knock, lost her composure after being dismissed in the 40th over. Frustrated after mistiming a scoop shot straight to Harmanpreet Kaur at square leg, she slammed her bat on the pitch before leaving the field visibly annoyed.

Her outburst came in a match where Pakistan struggled collectively, eventually being bowled out for 159 while chasing 247, losing to India by 88 runs.

ICC Code of Conduct Breach Explained

The ICC confirmed that Amin had breached Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”

“Sidra was found to have breached Article 2.2… which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or fixtures during an international match,” the ICC said in a statement.

Since it was Amin’s first offence in a 24-month period, she received the minimum penalty — an official reprimand and one demerit point — after admitting the offence and accepting the sanction proposed by match referee Shandré Fritz.

What Does Article 2.2 Mean?

Under Article 2.2, any deliberate, reckless, or negligent action that damages advertising boards, boundary fences, dressing room doors, mirrors, or other fixtures — even unintentionally — is considered a breach. The offence is classified as Level 1, which carries a punishment ranging from a reprimand to a 50% match fee deduction and up to two demerit points.

What’s Next in the Tournament?

India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, have started their campaign strongly with wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and will next face South Africa on October 9 at the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will look to bounce back when they take on Australia on October 8, hoping to recover from the defeat and move up the points table.
