India’s young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel grabbed his big opportunity in style, scoring his maiden Test century against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. With Rishabh Pant still sidelined, Jurel made the most of his chance, crafting a superb 125-run innings laced with 15 boundaries and three sixes.
Batting alongside Ravindra Jadeja, Jurel added 206 runs for the fifth wicket, putting India in complete command at 448/5 by stumps on Day 2, with a huge lead of 286 runs. His innings eventually ended when debutant Khary Pierre claimed his maiden wicket by inducing an inside edge.
The Emotional Salute
Beyond the runs, it was Jurel’s celebrations that captured hearts. After reaching both his fifty and his hundred, the 24-year-old marked the milestones with an army salute — a tribute to his father, a Kargil war veteran, and his deep bond with the Indian Army.
Speaking after the day’s play, Jurel explained, “The salute after my fifty was for my father, but the one after my hundred was something I had planned for a very long time. I have always been close to the Indian Army, seeing my father since childhood.”
Respect for the Real Heroes
Jurel went on to dedicate his century to the soldiers, humbly acknowledging that their sacrifices far outweigh achievements on the cricket field.
“What we do on the ground and what they do on the battlefield is beyond comparison. I will always dedicate my performances to them. I have seen their lives closely and always asked my father about it. This hundred is for those who truly deserve it — the Indian Army,” he said.
Jurel’s knock not only marked the start of a promising Test career but also stood out as a moving tribute to courage, sacrifice, and the values instilled in him through his father’s service.
