BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has expressed full confidence in the Indian women’s cricket team ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, scheduled from September 30 to November 2. India will open their campaign against Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, marking a historic moment as the city hosts World Cup matches for the first time.
Saikia on India’s Preparation
Speaking to ANI, Saikia highlighted the team’s recent success and readiness to chase their maiden ICC title.
“The Indian team has been doing extremely well. Defeating England in England, both in T20Is and ODIs, is no easy task, yet they did it handsomely. So far, India has not won an ICC Women’s Trophy. This time, the challenge is bigger, but the Indian team is fully prepared to take it on,” Saikia said.
He underlined that the players are determined to go one step further than in 2017, when they came agonizingly close but lost to England in a dramatic final at Lord’s.
Guwahati’s First-Ever World Cup Matches
The 2025 edition will also be special for the northeast, with Guwahati hosting World Cup fixtures for the very first time. Earlier, during the Men’s 2023 ODI World Cup, the city had hosted only warm-up games.
Saikia noted the excitement in the region:
“The infrastructure has developed significantly, and fans here are eagerly waiting for the opening match on September 30. This will put Guwahati and the northeast firmly on the world cricket map.”
A Grand Opening Ceremony
Adding to the buzz, the ICC confirmed that renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal will headline the opening ceremony in Guwahati. She will perform the official anthem, Bring it Home, celebrating the spirit, energy, and global unity of women’s cricket.
